Beverley Sydney – Founder, Sydney Hudson Accountants
Bev's Story
I didn’t take the traditional route into accountancy.
After studying Economics at university, I fell into teaching — and honestly, I loved it. There’s something about the moment a concept clicks for someone, when you watch confusion become clarity in real time, that never gets old. I was good at it.
But even then, something was shifting beneath the surface.
During my teaching years I discovered Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People — and it stopped me in my tracks. Here was a framework for living with intention. Not reacting to whatever life handed you, but designing how you showed up. Beginning with the end in mind. That idea took root in me and never left.
Then came bible school. Faith gave me something even deeper — a sense of purpose, of building something that actually means something. Not just accumulating, but contributing. Not just surviving, but serving.
By the time my son was born and I looked at the life I was building and asked myself — honestly, for the first time — is this it? — I already had the tools to answer that question properly.
So I tried PR. It wasn’t me. I went back to tutoring. Closer — but still something was missing.
What I kept returning to, quietly, was something that had always felt effortless: numbers. Structure. The way a set of accounts could tell you everything about a business — not just what happened, but why, and what it meant. The tax element in particular felt less like admin and more like architecture. Something you could shape. A tool, not a form.
Rich Dad Poor Dad arrived at exactly the right moment. Then Tony Robbins. And suddenly everything I’d been quietly building — the discipline, the faith, the conviction that life could be designed rather than just endured — had a financial language to match it.
I’d spent years being brilliant at helping other people — and somehow I’d never applied that same rigour to my own financial future. Most people haven’t. Most business owners haven’t. They’re working harder than they’ve ever worked, turning over more money than they ever imagined, and quietly wondering why it doesn’t feel like enough. Why the wealth they expected to be building isn’t quite materialising. Why every year ends with a tax bill that surprises them and a set of accounts that tells them what happened — but never what to do next.
I knew that feeling. And I knew I could change it for people.
Sydney Hudson wasn’t built to be another accounting firm. It was built because I believe that the founders running serious service businesses in this country deserve more than compliance. They deserve someone in their corner who thinks about their finances the way they think about their business — strategically, structurally, with one eye always on where they’re going.
Covey taught me to begin with the end in mind. The ARCH Framework® is that principle applied to financial architecture. A structured, deliberate approach to building something that lasts — not improvised around what happened last year, but designed around where you’re going next.
My sons are older now. And when they ask me what I do, I don’t say I’m an accountant. I tell them I help people build something that lasts.
